Ayurvedic Massage

Ayurvedic massage, also known as Abhyanga, is a traditional Indian holistic healing practice.

The treatment involves the application of warm, medicated oils being poured over the body and a gentle stream of warm herbal oil being poured on the forehead.

Being rooted in the ancient Indian system of medicine, Ayurvedic therapy emphasises the balance of mind, body, and spirit.

More FAQs

The Holistic approach

A holistic practitioner will consider all symptoms together as a whole (whether mental, emotional, or physical). A holistic practitioner will apply the Ayurvedic Massage to treat the person as a whole, rather than treating specific conditions in isolation.

The mind-body link

Emotional stress caused by grief, shock, abandonment, mental exhaustion or major life-changes can leave us drained and prone to illness. Stress has been linked to tension, decreased functioning of the immune system and an increased risk of developing obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. Ayurvedic Massage stimulates the body’s own natural healing mechanism.

What will it involve?

Your practitioner will complete a detailed consultation and medical history to identify the reasons for the treatment and your wellness improvement goals.

Following an assessment, your practitioner can provide you with a treatment plan and timescales to achieve the desired goals.

Your practitioner may carry out a postural or bio-mechanical assessment to access global muscles and their effects on the presented symptoms and conditions.

To start we personalise your treatment room by creating a space that will promote calm, relaxation and balance the nervous system.

The warm Ayurvedic oils are applied rhythmically all over your body, followed by specific massage techniques to melt away the built-up stress and tension that is found throughout your entire body.

This holistic stress reducing treatment creates a wonderful state of relaxation by working on areas of tension on the back and there is particular emphasis around the shoulders, along the spine, head, neck and the feet.

Infra-red heat therapy may also be used to aid a deeper relaxing experience.

Why have the procedure?

An excellent choice of massage to:

  • Release muscle tension
  • Ease aches & pains
  • Improve joint stiffness
  • Release head & neck tension
  • Ease a clenched jaw
  • Ease headaches
  • Improve circulation
  • Aids relaxation
  • De-stress
  • Ease anxiety
  • Balance the nervous system
  • Balance emotions
  • Improve sleep
  • Promote a sense of wellbeing

Does it hurt?

Each individual’s response will vary depending on the specific massage technique applied and if any symptoms such as inflammation or tension is present. Care is taken to adjust the pressure to suit you to make it as comfortable and as relaxing as possible.

How many treatments do I need?

Your practitioner will endeavor to treat your concerns as much as possible in a single treatment. However, depending on your state of being and your improvement goals you may need a course of 3 to 5 treatments, taken every 1 to 2 weeks to achieve desired results.

How quickly will I see the results?

You will feel results immediately after a single treatment and progressively after each session during a course of treatments.

How long will the results last?

Commencing a single treatment, you will feel more less tension, calm and relaxed for several days and up to several weeks following a course of treatments. However, this depends on many factors such as how one cares for oneself post treatment, stress, work environment, exercise choices, hormone influences and lifestyle.

What are the side effects?

A Ayurvedic Massage offers minimal if any side-effects to treatment. However, all massage therapies if taken incorrectly can cause harm, therefore it is important to always seek guidance from a registered professional.

Is a Ayurvedic Massage safe?

Providing a Ayurvedic Massage is applied by a qualified, competent practitioner, with knowledge of the technique the risks are extremely minimal.
