Preventing & Treating Pigmentation

Sun exposure is one of the leading causes of pigmentation and premature skin ageing. Over time, UV damage can trigger uneven skin tone, dark patches, fine lines and loss of firmness particularly on the face, chest and hands.
What Is Pigmentation?
Pigmentation, or hyperpigmentation, occurs when the skin produces excess melanin the natural pigment responsible for skin colour. This overproduction creates darker areas of skin that can vary in size, depth and intensity.
Melanin is produced by melanocyte cells within the skin. While melanin naturally helps protect the skin from UV damage, excessive sun exposure and other triggers can overstimulate these cells, leading to persistent pigmentation concerns.
Common Causes Of Pigmentation
Although sun exposure is the primary trigger, several contributing factors can increase the likelihood of pigmentation developing, including:
- Hormonal changes such as pregnancy or menopause
- Genetics & fair skin types
- Certain medications
- Inflammation from acne, skin trauma or aggressive treatments
- Environmental stress & ageing
- Photosensitising skincare or chemical
Types of Pigmentation
Melasma
Often linked to hormones and sun exposure, melasma appears as symmetrical patches on the cheeks, forehead and upper lip. It is one of the most complex forms of pigmentation to treat.
Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH)
Dark marks that develop after inflammation or injury to the skin, commonly following acne, burns or aesthetic procedures.
Age Spots (Solar Lentigines)
Caused by cumulative UV exposure over time, these appear most commonly on the face, chest and hands.
Freckles
Freckles are genetically influenced but become more visible with sun exposure, particularly in lighter skin tones.
How To Prevent Pigmentation
Prevention is key when it comes to maintaining an even complexion and reducing long-term skin damage.
Here at Emporium Treatment Clinic, our top recommendations include:
- Daily broad-spectrum SPF 50, re-apply every 2 hours
- Wear a hat and protective clothing in direct sunlight
- Use tyrosinase inhibitor skin care daily
- Use antioxidant-rich skincare to defend against free radical damage
Consistency is essential. Even minimal daily UV exposure can worsen existing pigmentation and trigger new discolouration.
How Pigmentation Is Treated
Successful pigmentation treatment requires a personalised approach. At Emporium Treatment Clinic an in-depth skin analysis allows our aesthetician to assess the type, depth and cause of pigmentation before creating a tailored treatment plan.
Effective treatment programmes typically combine:
Medical-Grade Skincare Regime
Including tyrosinase inhibitors that help regulate melanin production and prevent further pigmentation from developing. SPF’s and Antioxidants to protect against melanin stimulation.
In Clinic Treatments
Chemical Peels
Targeted exfoliating treatments designed to breakdown and lift excess pigment and improve overall skin clarity and skin tone.
Microneedling
The microneedling procedure combined with medical grade ingredients works to diminish pigmentation.
Exosome Epigenetic Skin Treatment
