How To Look After Your Skin As Autumn Season Starts

There is something rather lovely about the arrival of autumn. The days become a little shorter, the air feels crisper and the leaves begin to change from summer green to beautiful shades of gold, copper and rust.
But while we may enjoy the change in season, our skin isn’t always quite so enthusiastic.
As the temperature drops, humidity levels fall and the wind becomes cooler and drier, our skin can begin to lose moisture. Then, of course, there is central heating to contend with, which can make the air indoors even drier. The result can be skin that feels tight, dehydrated, flaky or more sensitive than usual.
At the same time, autumn often brings a change in our lifestyle. We naturally spend more time indoors, exercise routines can change and we tend to reach for warmer, more comforting foods. All of these things can have an effect on the appearance and condition of the skin.
The good news is that a few thoughtful changes to your skincare routine can make a considerable difference.
At the Emporium Treatment Clinic in Marylebone, our approach has always been to look at the skin individually rather than simply follow seasonal trends. With more than 37 years of experience in advanced skincare, facialist and aesthetics, senior aesthetician Angela Taffinder can assess what your skin actually needs and recommend a treatment and home-care routine accordingly.
Is Your Skin Dry Or Dehydrated?
These two terms are often used interchangeably, but they are not quite the same.
Dry skin is generally lacking in natural oils, whereas dehydrated skin is lacking water. Interestingly, even oily or combination skin can become dehydrated, so feeling tight doesn’t necessarily mean that your skin is naturally dry.
Autumn’s colder temperatures and lower humidity can contribute to both oil and moisture loss. You may notice increased tightness, flaking, redness, sensitivity or that fine lines suddenly appear a little more noticeable.
This is the time to concentrate on replenishing and retaining moisture.
Look for ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, ceramides and other humectants, which help attract and retain water within the skin. Hyaluronic acid is particularly well known for its ability to bind water and support a smoother, more hydrated appearance.
Antioxidants such as vitamin C can also be valuable during the autumn months, helping to protect the skin from environmental stress while supporting a brighter, more even-looking complexion.
Your moisturiser is equally important. Think of it as the final layer that helps seal in the hydration beneath.
The right texture will depend on your individual skin. A naturally dry skin may benefit from a richer, more nourishing formulation, while an oily or blemish-prone skin is unlikely to thank you for a heavy, occlusive cream. Lightweight, oil-free formulations can be a better choice for oily or congested skin.
And don’t forget your weekly routine. A carefully selected hydrating, nourishing or purifying mask once or twice a week can give the skin an additional boost when it is feeling particularly depleted.
Look After Your Skin Barrier
Your skin barrier is incredibly important. It helps prevent excessive moisture loss while providing protection from the outside environment.
Unfortunately, cold weather, dry air, central heating and over-cleansing can all put additional stress on it.
If your barrier becomes compromised, the skin can become increasingly dry, reactive and uncomfortable. Those already prone to sensitivity, eczema, dermatitis or rosacea may notice that their skin becomes more easily irritated during the colder months.
A good autumn routine is therefore less about using more products and more about using the right products in the right way.
Avoid unnecessarily harsh cleansers, excessive exfoliation and heavily fragranced products if your skin is feeling sensitive. Instead, concentrate on gentle cleansing, hydration and barrier-supportive ingredients such as ceramides and soothing moisturising agents.
Apply your skincare from the lightest formulation to the richest, allowing each layer to work with the next. A well-chosen moisturiser can then help lock everything in.
If your skin is particularly dry, compromised or uncomfortable, it may be time to simplify your routine rather than add more active ingredients.
Do Not Put Your SPF Away
One of the biggest autumn skincare mistakes is assuming that cooler weather means you no longer need sun protection.
It doesn’t.
UV exposure doesn’t disappear simply because the temperature has dropped or the sky looks cloudy. UVA, in particular, can be present throughout the year and contributes to premature skin ageing and pigmentation.
A broad-spectrum SPF 50 should therefore remain part of your morning routine throughout autumn and winter.
If you spend significant time outdoors, reapplication is still important, particularly when exposed to direct sunlight for prolonged periods.
And while there is growing interest in the effects of visible and high-energy light from digital devices, skincare advice around these exposures is still evolving. For everyday skin protection, your priorities should remain a good antioxidant routine, appropriate skincare and consistent broad-spectrum SPF.
Autumn Is A Good Time For A Skin Reset
Our skin doesn’t exist in isolation. How we sleep, eat, hydrate and manage stress can all influence how it looks and feels.
As the evenings draw in, autumn can be a wonderful opportunity to slow down a little. Drink plenty of water, maintain a varied and nutritious diet, keep moving and perhaps most importantly, make time for proper rest.
There is also something to be said for enjoying the season rather than fighting it. A little more time at home, nourishing food, exercise, relaxation and good sleep can all form part of a healthy autumn routine.
