Autumn Season Skin Boost

Nov 8, 2023 | Blog, Skin Care, Skincare

Autumn to me is signified by the clocks changing. There is a shift in time and temperature. The leaves on the trees start to lose their moisture and turn from green to vibrant golden and rust colours. The autumn season can bring about many changes to our environment, which can also create havoc with our skin.

Autumn brings with it colder temperatures, more wind, drier air, and a decrease in humidity. Then the central heating goes on, all of which can cause dry, dehydrated and sensitive skin. We also tend to hibernate, and our diet naturally changes with a craving for more comforting foods, which, if not the healthier options, can cause breakouts and spots.

As the days get shorter and the temperatures start to drop, it’s time to start thinking about how the change in season can affect your skin and learn how you can be kind to it. By understanding the damaging effects of the autumn season, you can take proactive measures to keep your skin healthy.

With over 35+ years, The Emporium Treatment Clinic senior aesthetician, Angela is able to help you take these measures. So why not pop in and visit us in Marylebone, London, if you feel you need a consultation.

Here’s more from Angela on the topic of autumn skin:

Dry, Dehydrated Skin
Dry skin is categorised by skin that is lacking of natural oils. Dehydrated skin is categorised by skin that is lacking in moisture. It is possible to have dry, dehydrated skin simultaneously. Oily skin can also lack in moisture, which may feel like dry skin when in fact it is only dehydrated.

The cooler temperatures and lower humidity of autumn can cause either or both natural oil and moisture loss in the skin, whereby it can become dry and, or dehydrated. This can lead to flaking, redness, and a tight, itchy feeling.

To prevent dehydrated skin, apply products that contain hyaluronic acid, ceramides and humectants to boost hydration levels.

Hyaluronic Acid is the gold standard in skin hydration. It gains its reputation by enabling superior moisture retention through the use of Hyaluronic acid, which can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water and gives it unparalleled ability to keep the skin hydrated and plump.

Products that contain Vitamin C, an anti-oxidant, protect, heal, and repair the skin’s cells with a brightening and boosting affect.

The application of a moisturiser will lock in the active ingredients to help the natural moisture within the skin. Take care to select a moisturiser specific to your skin condition, whether oily, combination, or dry.

Skin types that have a natural predisposition towards dryness may need a slightly richer moisturiser, thus a product which contains more oil ingredients.

An oily skin condition is prone to blocked pores, therefore a heavy oil-based moisturiser would not be suitable, and might very likely contribute to the build-up of the oils which cause the congestion. Oil free moisturisers are widely available for oily skin types. Niacinamide is a good option for oily skin, helping to regulate oil production and soothe inflammation caused by blemishes and breakouts.

Apply the layers of products in the morning and in the evening daily.

Apply purifying, hydrating and nourishing masks twice a week.

Weakened Skin Barrier
The skin’s barrier helps to protect it from environmental damage, but the dry autumn air can weaken it. This can lead to further moisture loss and increased risk of irritation and inflammation.

Skin types that have a natural predisposition to rosacea, eczema, or dermatitis may experience intensified symptoms of dryness, dehydration, and sensitivity from a damaged skin barrier.

There is also an increase in the appearance of dehydration through fine lines and wrinkles.

To keep your skin barrier strong, avoid harsh ingredients and fragrances on your skin as they can strip the surface protective barrier.

Protect the skin barrier by applying layers of products that contain active hydrating, healing, and protection properties, such as hyaluronic, Vitamin C serums, and moisturisers. For ultra-barrier protection and repair apply a product such as the Dermalogica Barrier Repair. Always apply the lightest product first, and the heaviest last to seal in the layers of moisture.

Emulsions such as emulsifying ointments also repair the skin barrier, and are especially affective on open dry skin, such as eczema and dermatitis. Simply apply directly to the skin with warm water, gently massage, then rinse.

Products containing Vitamin E supports collagen production can help to keep the skin supple and healthy.

Sun Damage
Cooler temperatures can be very deceptive, as it feels as if there any no UV rays. However, UV rays are always present during day light, and can cause damage to your skin whatever the weather condition.

HEV light from all devices is another skin damaging consideration that one is exposed to throughout the day.

Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 50 every day and re- apply every two hours to avoid UV exposure from daylight or HEV light.

The application of the SPF will complete the layering skin protection process.
