Post Summer Skin Reset

We all adore the summer with long, lighter days, sunshine on our skin, leisurely lunches, alfresco dinners, a glass of something chilled and evenings that seem to go on forever. It’s one of the loveliest times of the year.
But while we are enjoying the freedom of summer, our skin does not always feel quite so carefree.
By the end of the season, you may notice that your complexion looks a little duller than usual, feels dry or dehydrated, or has become more sensitive and reactive. Pigmentation may be more noticeable, breakouts can appear unexpectedly and your skin can simply feel out of balance.
And then, of course, there’s the tan.
We all understand the appeal of beautifully bronzed, glowing skin. A little colour can make us feel instantly healthier and more confident. But there is an important distinction between a healthy-looking glow and sun-damaged skin.
If your skin has been exposed to the sun without adequate protection, the effects can gradually become visible; uneven pigmentation, fine lines, wrinkles, loss of radiance and a generally more weathered appearance. Sometimes, it can feel as though you have aged considerably over just a few months.
So, as summer draws to a close, it’s the perfect time to take a closer look at what the warmer months may have done to your skin and more importantly, how we can help restore it.
What Does Summer Actually Do To Our Skin?
Sun Exposure & Premature Ageing
Sun exposure is one of the biggest contributors to visible skin ageing. UV radiation can cause damage within the skin’s cells, eventually becoming visible as fine lines, wrinkles, pigmentation and loss of elasticity.
The best approach is, of course, prevention. A broad-spectrum SPF 50+ should be part of your daily skincare routine throughout the year, not simply something reserved for holidays or particularly sunny days.
If you are particularly prone to pigmentation, a focused SPF protection formula alongside an antioxidant-rich skincare routine can be a valuable addition to your daily skin defence.
And remember UV exposure does not stop simply because the sky is cloudy. UVA can penetrate through clouds and windows, which is why daily protection is so important.
There is also increasing interest in the effects of high-energy visible (HEV) light from digital devices and environmental factors.
Skin Dehydration Caused By Summer
Heat, sunshine, air conditioning, swimming and naturally, a few more glasses of wine or cocktails than usual can all contribute to dehydration.
Dehydrated skin can look tired, lacklustre and crepey, while fine lines may suddenly appear more pronounced. It can also feel tight, uncomfortable or unusually sensitive.
The answer is not to simply applying a richer moisturiser. Your skin needs water as well as nourishment.
Ensure you are drinking plenty of water throughout the day and consider introducing ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, which help attract and retain moisture within the skin.
When Heat Triggers Sensitivity
For some complexions, summer heat can be particularly challenging.
High temperatures, increased sweating, alcohol, later nights and changes in diet can all contribute to flushing, redness and sensitivity. For those prone to rosacea or reactive skin, the warmer months can be especially noticeable.
If your skin is feeling hot, flushed or irritated, resist the temptation to overload it with active ingredients. A gentle, calming routine that supports the skin barrier is often the better approach.
Why Summer Can Cause Breakouts
There is a reason many people experience more congestion and breakouts during the summer.
Heat stimulates the sebaceous glands, increasing oil production. Combine this with sweat, sunscreen, make-up, pollution and dead skin cells and you have the perfect conditions for blocked pores.
Sweat itself is not necessarily the problem, it’s what happens when sweat mixes with excess oil, bacteria and debris sitting on the skin.
Summer lifestyle changes can also play a part. Different foods, later nights, more alcohol, travel and changes to your usual routine can all subtly affect the skin.
The key is to keep things balanced. Choose a gentle cleanser, appropriate exfoliation and lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturisers rather than stripping the skin in an attempt to control oil.
Interestingly, even your sunscreen can sometimes be part of the problem. While SPF is absolutely essential, some formulations can feel too rich for oilier or congestion-prone skin. Choosing the right SPF for your individual skin type is therefore just as important as wearing it.
Free Radicals And That ‘Summer-Tired’ Complexion
After months of sunshine, heat and environmental exposure, your skin may simply look tired.
UV radiation and environmental pollution can generate free radicals, which contribute to oxidative stress within the skin. Over time, this can affect collagen, elastin and the skin’s overall ability to maintain a healthy, radiant appearance.
This is where antioxidants become particularly valuable.
Ingredients such as Vitamin C can help support the skin against environmental stressors while also contributing to a brighter, more even-looking complexion.
Give Your Skin A Little Post-Summer Love
The good news is that summer skin can be restored.
September is actually one of our favourite times to reassess the skin. Once the holidays, late nights and long days in the sunshine are behind us, we can look at what your skin genuinely needs rather than simply reacting to what we see in the mirror.
For some, that may mean replenishing hydration and repairing the skin barrier. For others, it may be addressing pigmentation, congestion, sensitivity or the first signs of sun damage.
At Emporium Treatment Clinic, Marylebone, we believe in a personalised approach to skin health. Your skin should be assessed individually, with treatments and homecare selected to restore balance, luminosity and long-term skin health.
It’s about looking after your skin for many summers to come.
