Will Sclerotherapy Get Rid Of My Spider Veins?

Yes, it can.
Sclerotherapy is widely regarded as the “gold standard” treatment for spider veins and for good reason. It’s highly effective, with studies showing an improvement of around 50–80% per session.
Thread veins are incredibly common. It’s estimated that around 15% of men and the majority of older women will experience them at some point, although they can affect younger people too.
The good news is that with the right treatment plan, they can be significantly reduced, helping you feel more confident in your skin.
What Is Sclerotherapy?
From the Greek word ‘scleros’, meaning ‘to make hard’, the treatment uses a very fine needle to inject a liquid called sclerosant into the vein, which subsequently becomes hard to the touch causing the spider vein to collapse, seal shut, destroy and breakdown.
What Are Spider Veins?
Spider veins, often called thread veins are small, visible blood vessels that sit just beneath the skin’s surface. They usually appear as fine red, purple, or blue lines and are most commonly found on the face, as well as the thighs, calves and ankles.
They often begin as very small veins, but if left untreated on the legs, they can develop into varicose veins, larger, swollen veins that may bulge from the skin.
While many people are mainly concerned about how thread veins look, they can sometimes lead to discomfort if they progress. Symptoms may include aching, heaviness, swelling and tired legs.
There are several factors that can contribute to their development. These include sun exposure, temperature extremes, genetics, alcohol consumption and skin trauma. Lifestyle factors such as prolonged standing, high-impact exercise, pregnancy and weight gain can also increase pressure on the veins and make them more noticeable.
What Does Sclerotherapy Treatment Involve?
At our Marylebone, Emporium Treatment Clinic, your sclerotherapy journey begins with a thorough consultation. Your practitioner will assess your vascular concerns looking at the type, condition and location of the veins, while also discussing your goals. This helps us create a treatment plan tailored specifically to you.
Once your skin is cleansed and prepared, a specialised solution, called a sclerosant is carefully injected into the targeted veins using a very fine needle. This solution works by intentionally and gently irritating the inner lining of the vein, causing it to swell, stick together, harden and eventually collapse.
As the treated vein closes, blood is naturally redirected to nearby healthy veins. Over time, the body breaks down the treated vessel into tiny particles, which are gradually eliminated through the skin’s natural processes, allowing the vein to fade and disappear.
To finish, compression stockings or a bandage is applied. This supports proper healing, helps seal the vein and minimises potential side effects.
The treatment is precise and safe, targeting only the affected veins without harming the surrounding tissue.
How Quickly Will I See Results From Sclerotherapy?
It’s completely normal for the area to look slightly red straight after the treatment. this is part of your body’s natural healing response.
Mild side effects can occur and usually settle quickly. These may include redness, slight swelling, bruising, or occasional scabbing.
Results develop gradually. Smaller spider veins often fade within 3 to 6 weeks, while larger veins can take around 3 to 4 months to fully improve. For best results, most people need a course of 2 to 4 sessions.
Once treated, those veins will not return, but over time, new ones can develop, which is why maintenance treatments are sometimes recommended.
