Detox Diet Tips From Skin & Wellness Advocate

As a skin aesthetician, wellness advocate and yoga instructor working with clients in Marylebone, London I often get asked ‘What should I eat during a detox?’.
If you are thinking about doing a gentle spring detox here are some of my detox diet tips:
What Should I Eat During A Detox?
The good news is that a detox diet does not need to be complicated or restrictive. In fact, the best approach is usually the simplest one, focusing on fresh, wholesome foods that support the body’s natural cleansing systems.
During a spring reset, I often recommend shifting towards a plant-rich, whole-food diet filled with colourful fruits, vegetables, fibre and healthy fats. These foods provide the nutrients your body needs to repair, restore and rebalance after the heavier habits many of us fall into during winter.
Eat A Variety Of Plant Foods
A variety of plant foods helps support the gut microbiome, the trillions of beneficial bacteria that influence digestion, immunity, inflammation and overall health.
Fresh vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts and whole grains provide fibre and nutrients needed for healthy digestion and cellular repair.
Load Up On Leafy Greens
Leafy greens such as spinach, kale and spring greens are particularly beneficial during a detox. They are packed with fibre and nutrients that support gut micro-biome, digestion and bowel health.
These vegetables are rich in chlorophyll and antioxidants that support liver function, digestion and inflammation control.
Fibre The Unsung Hero
A healthy detox diet should include foods naturally rich in fibre, which boosts a thriving gut micro-biome, keeps you fuller for longer, supports regular digestion and helps remove waste from the body.
Some excellent fibre-rich foods include:
- Whole grains
- Lentils & chickpeas
- Berries, pears, prunes & figs
- Fibrous vegetables
- Nuts such as, almonds, brazil & pecan
- Seeds such as flax, chia & pumpkin
Don’t Forget To Eat Healthy Fats
Healthy fats support the brain, joints and hormonal balance..These foods also help reduce inflammation and keep you feeling satisfied between meals.
Include foods such as:
- Avocados
- Oily fish such as salmon & sardines
- Nuts and seeds
- Coconut oil
Some people also choose supplements such as Viridian Organic Scandinavian Rainbow Trout Oil or Viridian Vegan EPA & DHA Oil to ensure they are getting adequate omega-3 intake.
Coconut oil is particularly versatile and can be used for cooking, added to smoothies, or blended into warm drinks.
Choose Quality Protein
If you include animal protein in your diet, try to opt for high-quality choices such as free-range poultry and grass-fed meats where possible, as these are generally more nutrient-dense and easier for the body to process.
Including plant based protein such as beans, lentils, pulses can keep you fuller for longer, create colourful and creative meals of goodness.
Look For Polyphenol-rich Foods
Another simple way to support your body is by adding more polyphenol-rich foods to your diet. Polyphenols are powerful plant compounds that help protect the body from inflammation and everyday stress.
You will find them in colourful foods such as berries, apples, leafy greens and olives, as well as in cocoa, dark chocolate, beans, nuts, spices and green tea. The bonus? They’re also fantastic for supporting a healthy, thriving gut microbiome.
Don’t Forget Fermented Foods
Fermented foods help support a healthy gut microbiome. Try to add 2 to 3 portions per day. Avoid versions with added sugars where possible.
Options include:
- Sauerkraut
- Kimchi
- Miso
- Naturally fermented pickles
- Kombucha
- Live yogurt
- Sourdough bread
- Cheese
Herbs n Spice & All Things Nice
Herbs and spices are not just flavourful; they are plant based foods packed full of powerful health benefits.
Ingredients such as turmeric, ginger, peppermint, fennel and cinnamon can support digestion while offering anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
Hydration During a Detox
Hydration is essential for supporting the body’s cleansing systems.
Aim to drink around 1.5 to 2.5 litres of water per day, depending on your activity levels.
Many people enjoy starting the day with warm lemon water, which gently stimulates digestion.
Herbal teas such as peppermint, ginger, chamomile or fennel can also support digestion and relaxation throughout the day.
If plain water feels a little boring, try adding slices of cucumber, lemon, lime or orange for a refreshing variation.
Low-sugar smoothies can provide a quick, nourishing meal when made with ingredients such as leafy greens, plant milk, fruit, seeds and healthy fats.
Here’s a few recipes to get you started….
A useful tip: slice bananas and avocados, place flat on baking paper, wrap, then freeze. That way you can easily add small amounts to smoothies without wasting fruit.
Simple Detox Diet & Lifestyle Tips
Food plays an important role in a detox, but it’s really the small daily habits that can make the biggest difference.
A good place to start is by keeping things simple. Try preparing more of your own meals so you know exactly what you’re eating, aim for three balanced meals a day and be mindful of portion sizes. Cutting back on constant sugary snacks can also help your body regulate energy and digestion more naturally.
Some people also like to try intermittent fasting, where meals are eaten within an eight-hour window, giving the body a longer rest period to repair and rebalance. It’s not essential, but it can work well for some people.
Another easy but powerful habit is simply slowing down when you eat. Eating on the go can keep the body in “fight or flight” mode, which isn’t ideal for digestion. When you sit down, relax and eat mindfully, your body switches into its natural “rest and digest” state — helping you absorb nutrients and support healthy digestion.
