Post Summer Skin SOS

Sep 16, 2024 | Body, Health, Nutrition, Skin Care

We all love the summer vibe, lots of sunshine, meeting friends for alfresco dining and a glass or two, enjoying the longer days and later nights. But sadly, our skin and health can suffer as a consequence. Our skin can become dull, dry, over sensitive, dehydrated and with an uneven tone. Breakouts can erupt, and you may feel your general health is out of balance too.

It’s without doubt that most of us love a tan. A bronzed, glowing skin really gives us a boost. But if you haven’t tanned your skin safely using a full spectrum SPF 50+, you have potentially put your skin health at risk. This can lead to uneven skin tone, pigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles, with general signs of age damaged skin from which one may hardly recognise oneself.

Here we discuss the damaging effects of summer on the skin and how to combat them.

The sun’s rays can damage the skin in many ways, from visible signs to deeper skin issues.

Prolonged sun exposure can cause cellular skin damage, which becomes visible on the skin’s surface as fine lines, wrinkles, and dark spots. To combat this, it’s important to protect your skin with the most appropriate sunscreen, at least SPF50+ and SPF130 if your skin is prone to pigmentation, applied every two hours. Remember to apply daily even if there is no sun as there is that damaging blue ray HEV (high energy visible light) emitted onto your skin every time you glance at your phone or other device.

Dehydration is another issue that can arise due to the heat of sun, and of course alcohol is contributing factor. When the skin is dehydrated, it can become dull, dry, and flaky. To combat this, it’s important to stay hydrated throughout the day and use products that are specifically formulated to lock in moisture such as hyaluronic acid.

The excessive heat can cause the skin to become overheated, which can cause it to become red, irritated and flare up into the condition known as rosacea. Later nights, food changes, and alcohol also play an important part.

The warmer weather stimulates the sebaceous glands to produce more oil. This excess oil can trap dirt, dead skin cells, and bacteria, leading to clogged pores.

Sweat can also contribute to clogged pores. When sweat mixes with oil and dirt, it can create a breeding ground for bacteria.

Excessive heat can cause the skin’s natural oils to become unbalanced, leading to an increase in breakouts.  Again, the lifestyle changes during the summer months can subconsciously stress the body and contribute to break out activity. To combat this, it’s important to use gentle cleansers, exfoliants and moisturisers that are non-comedogenic and free from harsh chemicals.

While sunscreen is essential for protecting your skin from harmful UV rays, some types of sunscreen can be comedogenic, meaning they can clog pores. Using an SPF or moisturiser too rich for your skin may also clog your skin’s pores.

Summer time overall can cause free-radical cellular skin damage, where the skin appears generally tired and lack lustre. To combat this, it’s important to use skin care products that contain anti-oxidants, such as Vitamin C.

By taking the necessary precautions, you can help protect your skin from the damaging effects of the last days of the summer.
