Winter Skin Tips & Treatments

Jan 26, 2024 | Skin Care

Winter can be a harsh time for the skin, with the cold, dry air stripping away moisture and leaving it feel parched and uncomfortable. It’s not just the cold conditions that can affect your skin, harsh indoor heating can deplete moisture from the air and from your skin.

As we hibernate, our diet naturally changes with a craving for more comforting foods, which, if not the healthier options, can cause breakouts and spots. In addition, the lack of natural day light can make the skin appear dull and sallow.

The winter months can wreak havoc on your skin making it dry, dehydrated, itchy, irritated, spotty and grey.

By understanding the damaging effects of the winter season, you can take proactive measures to keep your skin healthy.

With over 35+ years, The Emporium Treatment Clinic senior aesthetician, Angela is able to help you take these measures. So why not pop in and visit us in Marylebone, London, if you feel you need a consultation.

Here are some tips from Angela on how to help you keep your skin healthy and glowing during the winter months.

1. Moisturise Regularly

The cold temperatures and lower humidity of winter can cause either or both natural oil and moisture loss in the skin, whereby it can become dry and, or dehydrated. This can lead to flaking, redness, and a tight, itchy feeling.

2. Apply The Correct Moisturiser

An oily skin condition is prone to blocked pores; therefore, a heavy oil-based moisturiser would not be suitable, and might very likely contribute to the build-up of the oils which cause the congestion. Oil free moisturisers are widely available for oily skin types. Niacinamide is a good option for oily skin, helping to regulate oil production and soothe inflammation caused by blemishes and breakouts.

Skin types that have a natural predisposition towards dryness may need a slightly richer moisturiser, thus a product which contains more oil ingredients.

3. Boost Hydration

Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is a clear, gooey substance that is naturally produced by your body to retain water to keep your tissues well lubricated and hydrated. Half of the HA in your body is present in your skin, where it binds to water to help retain moisture. The natural aging process, exposure to UV, smoking, and cold weather can decrease the amount of HA in the skin.

Apply a serum directly after cleansing the skin to ensure it actively absorbs and hydrates.

4. Feed Your Skin

Products that contain Vitamin C, an anti-oxidant, protect, heal, and repair the skin’s cells which have a brightening and boosting affect.

5. Layer To Lock The Moisture In

Apply the layers of products in the morning and in the evening daily. Always apply the lightest product first, and the heaviest last to seal in the layers of moisture

The application of a moisturiser will lock in the active hyaluronic and vitamin C ingredients to support the natural moisture within the skin. Take care to select a moisturiser specific to your skin condition, whether oily, combination, or dry.

6. Protect Your Skin Barrier

The skin’s barrier helps to protect it from environmental damage, but the dry winter air can weaken it. This can lead to further moisture loss and increased risk of irritation and inflammation. Follow the layering skin care system.

7. Avoid Harsh Ingredients

To keep your skin moisturised and barrier strong, avoid harsh ingredients and fragrances on your skin as they can strip the surface protective barrier.

Emulsions such as emulsifying ointments also repair the skin barrier, and are especially affective on open dry skin, such as eczema and dermatitis. Simply apply directly to the skin with warm water, gently massage, then rinse.

Products containing Vitamin E supports collagen production can help to keep the skin supple and healthy.

8. Gently Exfoliate

Exfoliate your skin gently and regularly to avoid uneven skin texture, rough skin and flaky patches caused by dry, dehydrated.

Gentle and regular exfoliation will also help prevent congested skin with blackheads, whiteheads, and spots that can feel uneven to the touch.

New healthy skin cells retain more moisture than old dead skin cells, and help to keep the skin healthier and glowing.

Not exfoliating, then applying layers of luscious oil rich products on the skin can simply stick down the surface dead skin cells and pollutants, create a thickened, dull, dry skin texture.

There are a wide range of products from chemical to physical exfoliants.

9. SPF

Cooler temperatures can be very deceptive, as it feels as if there any no UV rays. However, UV rays are always present during day light, and can cause damage to your skin whatever the weather condition.

HEV light from all devices is another skin damaging consideration that one is exposed to throughout the day.

Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 50 every day and re- apply every two hours to avoid UV exposure from daylight or HEV light.

The application of the SPF will complete the layering skin protection process.
